Queer Academy - Re: News

Online Docuseries, 2023

Queer Academy is a 5-part docuseries that celebrates the good parts of being queer. Hosted by Celebrity Treasure Island winner James Mustapic, each episode explores a lesson that LGBTTQIA+ communities have to offer.

I was responsible for creating a brand package and animated graphics template for the journalists and editors to use in their production. The template allows individual customisation of texts, colors, and placement to accommodate desktop and mobile screen ratios. The graphics package includes animated title sequences, lower thirds, episode segment screens, end credits screens, and bespoke infographics.

✨Bonus: Initially we intended to use a custom-made typeface only for the title graphics, however the client wanted a distinct look for each asset. Therefore I had to individually customise existing alphabets, creating a bespoke font to streamline the use of the template.

Project delivered for Re:News under TVNZ and made with the support of NZ On Air.

Logo and Assets Development

Custom Fonts Development

🤓 To clarify, I am not an expert at typography and this is my attempt at creating a font:

  1. Individually customise the letters based on an existing typeface in Illustrator by adjusting their shape, width, and height to achieve a crafty and playful sticker look.

  2. Export the designs as SVGs and import them to FontForge for further parameter adjustments (spacing, kerning, etc).

  3. Finally exporting them into TrueType font file (.ttf) for client to use.

Template Functionality

The template is designed mainly for journalists and editors working in After Effects. It enables them to easily modify texts, colors, and placement without the need to create each asset manually from scratch. This streamlines the workflow between clients and designer, reduce major repetitive tasks, and allows journalists to make minor text adjustments as necessary without disrupting the overall layout and animation.

The templates are built using AE Expressions and can be accessed through the Essential Graphics feature.
